WFS Pokemon League Information

by Yoman Yu on October 05, 2017

Hello fellow Trainers (and Parents of aspiring Trainers),

Something exciting is brewing here at WoodForSheep! With great pleasure, we announce that we are now hosting official Pokemon League events at our Game Centre!

As a relative new member of the team, my name is Yoman. I am the organizer and judge for these fun events. A bit more about me:

  • I've collected since I was a child, since the base set (1999) was around up until Neo Series.
  • I took a long hiatus to focus on school and only recently came back to host events and collecting the cards we all know and love.
  • I keep up with the news and updates of the game and can answer many questions you may have of the Pokemon franchise or upcoming TCG related products.
  • Yes, I am a nut when it comes the knowledge I may have.

Events have been posted on the Pokemon.com website and the times we have noted are Sundays from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Our first scheduled event is on October 15, 2017. Future events are subject to change and we can adjust later to accommodate everyone's need/schedule.

EDIT: As of Feb 17th, 2018 - Sessions are now held on Saturdays from 1:30 to 4:00 pm

Trainers, please bring your 60-card deck and Pokemon ID if you have an account from Pokemon.com otherwise if you do not have one, we can create one when you visit.

Why come to Wood For Sheep for the Pokemon League? That may be a Burning (Shadows) question you have. [terrible pun, I know]

  • Unique Events and Formats (not everything has to be Standard or Expanded)
    • I have noticed in Markham/Scarborough or the TCG in general - unique formats are tougher to thrive or doesn't foster evolving strategies mostly due to prize structure. I am hoping to pull the creativity out of everyone and help shape lasting memories for those crazy deck building weeks!
    • Examples - a weekly challenge would be to use a Pokemon of one type, or from a particular generation, another would be no retreat for Pokemon with 3 or more retreat cost, etc.
    • The possibilities are endless! Make more fun decks or play with cards you normally wouldn't have!
  • Personal Touch and Deck Guidance/learning for new Players/Trainers
    • Support for newer players is often difficult. I recognize that all it takes is a few minutes or sessions to get a grasp of the game to make it enjoyable.
    • The game involves math, strategy concepts and social interaction - we will harness these qualities.
  • Pack for Playing, Unique Promotion Cards, Environment for Trading
    • The promotional cards provided by the Pokemon Company are a unique reward that rotates each season (one per month). They are rewarded for simply showing up and participating at the local league events.
    • The league cost is $5 per session to help maintain the venue for everyone and comes with a booster pack!
    • Trainers of all types including myself will be on hand to have trades out and help you discover cards you maybe missing or looking for, to build your deck!

If you are after competitive practice or wish to challenge a more structured approach - I do have decks personally to do battle with, so don't worry about not ever having an opponent to play with! Looking ahead - tournaments or higher prize events are coming soon once the venue has gained some ground.

That's quite a few benefits! As we grow together, there maybe changes and I am open to feedback, questions and comments - you can reach me via e-mail!

WoodForSheep also stocks a plethora of Pokemon product that can be purchased during the events. If there is something you're looking for, but can't find in our catalog, send us a message and we'll see what we can find out, through our sources.

That's it for now. I look forward to hearing or seeing you all on October 15th!

- Yoman

February 2018 Math Trade

by Nate T on February 13, 2018

WoodForSheep will be hosting a No-Ship Math Trade on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at the Game Centre.

All the details here.

Quick Summary

To participate, you will need

Key dates & times:

  • Submissions Deadline: Monday, February 19, 2018 after 10:00pm
  • Want Lists Deadline: Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:00pm
  • Results: Will be posted ASAP after the Want List Deadline.
  • Drop-off: Sunday, February 25, 2018 from 1:30PM to 2:00PM
  • Pick-up: Sunday, February 25, 2018 from 2:00PM to 2:30PM

What is a Math Trade?

Math Trades provide gamers with a way to trade away unwanted games for other players' unwanted games. All participants submit their list of games available for trade, and which titles they're willing to received in return (for each submitted game).

How does it work?

Ummm... This is where it can get complicated to explain. So let's use an example.

Miss Heart owns Game Green that just doesn't get played as much anymore. She puts it up for trade. Mr. Square has Game Orange that's also up for trade, that Miss Heart is interested in. Unfortunately, Mr. Square is not too keen on Game Green. In this case, no trade would occur.

But, what if Miss Heart can exchange Game Green into a game that Mr. Square would trade for? Like Miss Diamond's Game Gray. Miss Diamond isn't big into Game Green either, but would be interested in Mr. Circle's Game Yellow. Mr. Circle is interested in Game Green, and is willing to trade Game Yellow to Miss Heart for Game Green.

Miss Heart then swaps games with Miss Diamond (so she's now in possession of Game Gray), and now can go to Mr. Square for the Game Orange she really wants.

Now, take that above example, increased to multiple more opportunities and possibilities, and let a computer figure that all out... and that's a Math Trade.

Ok, I think I get it. So now what?

With your boardgamegeek account, you can put together a list of games you own, and are willing to part with. This will be open to everyone up until the "Submission deadline" (see Quick Summary).

Once the "Submission deadline" passes, everyone can see all the games that are available for trade, and you can then submit a "want list" for your games (ex. Game Green, which you own, for Game Orange). It's also possible that there are no games you're willing to take back, for a game you own, in which case you would submit a blank "want list".

After the "Want Lists Deadline" passes, we let the computer crunch the numbers and see what trades do occur. You'll be informed of the games you need to submit, and which ones you'll be receiving. Then its a matter of dropping by the Game Centre to say good bye to old games, and bringing home new titles.

Painting Challenge - Arcule, Paladin of Vengeance

by Nate T on November 28, 2017

Since WoodForSheep began hosting weekly sessions of Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer's League (DDAL) back in November of 2016, Herman B. (the player) has been developing and crafting his character known as Arcule, Paladin of Vengeance. Through many hours (real time) and weeks (game time) of adventures, he is now a bonafide hero of Faerun (Arcule, that is). He has saved those in distress, defended the helpless, and survived to tell the tale (still Arcule). However, as you can see from the pictures, Arcule has been a little gray. Ok, a lot gray, well, since the beginning.

It's time to add some colour to those gray cheeks!

For the inaugural WoodForSheep Painting Challenge, find and paint a vanilla figure to the ideal representation of Arcule, Paladin of Vengance!

*FYI... Pictured miniature is a pawn from the game Dungeon Run.

Contest details:

  • Entrance fee: $10 (includes one in-stock Bones Reaper miniature, valued at $3.49 or less)
  • Contest is open now.
  • Figure must be submitted to WoodForSheep by December 28, 2017 to qualify for judging and prize.
  • Final deliberation will include online poll via Facebook, a crackpot panel of 'judges' from WoodForSheep, and Herman B. himself!
  • Winner will be announced on January 4, 2018!
  • Prize: Bragging rights!... and a $20 WoodForSheep gift card.
  • Be advised, winning figure may not be returned to the entrant, as it may start being used to actually represent Arcule in future DDAL sessions.

The Basics

Male. Half-elf. 24 years old. 5'2. 176 lbs. Brown hair. Hazel eyes. Copperish skin.

Who is Arcule, Paladin of Vengeance?

I am the hybrid offspring of a human nobleman (name unknown) and an elven courtier (Mella). At conception, Mella was married to Beiro, with 1 year old son Syllin.

At first, I was growing like any elven lad, so no one was wiser to the affair (not even 'father'). My mother told me on my eighth birthyear, which I solemnly accepted. But by my twelfth birthyear, rumours and suspicions abound.

On Syllin's eighteenth birthyear (my seventeenth), playing a technical elven game in the woods, I (by this point an all but outright accused half-human) beat my family (immediate and greater) at the elven game (humiliatingly). Calling me "Vile One" I was immediately chased out of the territory; shunned by my family.

I had only the items on my person, out in the world, fending for myself. I lived with nature, too afraid to return, and no way of finding my paternal family.

Within a month, Trithereon (war god of liberty and retribution) approached me and warned me of an elven search party looking for me - intent on killing me. Forewarned, I was ready for them, and killed all four of them (Syllin and 3 cousins). I took a trophy from each hand, as a reminder - a rope necklace from which dangles four mummified elf fingers (Syllin's and 3 cousins').

Trithereon had also told me of a small sect where I would be able to find knowledge and power. I set out towards them to begin my new life, hoping to never see my family again, and serve Trithereon's cause.

5 years into my service, the organized Cult of the Dragon came sweeping through, intent on destroying all in their path. I lost many friends that day. Though Trithereon warned us of the impending attack, many thought us able to hold off the assault. I headed out to try and scout - though the cult came from another way, and I realized too late.

On that day, I decided I've hidden long enough, it was time to take on the injustices of the world straight on, and find Trithereon; maybe even find my family.

Chronicles as an Adventurer

  • Began adventuring in the town of Phandalin, following in the footsteps of loremaster, Volothamp Geddarm
  • Unfortunately died in an escapade there, but was revived by the kindness of the Emerald Enclave. Have since been able to stave off death - but not being unconscious
  • Defended many towns, villages and cities from warlords, sociopaths and other ne'er-do-wells, even of the giant variety
  • Joined other adventurers in the crusade to retrieve the Relics of Khundrukar, and rescue the priestess when we returned to White Plume Mountain
  • Through many adventures since, acquired several useful magical items: Ring of Mind Shielding (which I ended up pawning off to Fai Chen), Ioun Stone of Protection (which spins around my head; occasionally making me dizzy), and my new best friend Skeggox (a battle axe; replacing my signature flail)
